Committee Chairman Michael Pyles
On November 17, 2012, The Los Angeles Alumni Chapter held their 76th annual Black and White Ball at the Gateway Sheraton Hotel. The premiere event on the city’s social calendar, the chapter welcomed the city’s glitterati to the hotel’s grand ballroom for an evening of scholarship, splendid food, and outstanding music. First master of ceremony Brother DeMarco Morgan introduced the elegant college ladies of the Kappa Kourt and their young Nupe escorts who kicked off the evening with a dynamic presentation of poise and beauty. While their smiles lit up the room each couples flawless choreography wowed the audience with its intricacy and style. Last year’s queen, UCLA’s Carolina Smith, handed her reins over to new Kappa Kourt Queen, Milana Ayvazova, of Loyala Marymount who won the $1,000 scholarship that comes with the title.
The program then proceeded to the honorees of the night, Sandra Phillips Johnson, the 28th Farwest Regional Director of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated and brother Gerald Freeny, future president of the Tournament of Roses Association, respectively. Both honorees had long resumes in achievement and both talked about how honored they were and how important community service and hard work is going forward to effect change in Los Angeles and the world. Band DW3 and DJ Tyrone then took over and brothers and patrons packed the dance floor and got their party all the way on to classic old school tunes. Brother Michael Pyles and his co-chair Brother Robert Farrar were overjoyed at the turnout of the affair and look forward to an even grander Black and White Ball in 2013.
